Line numbers

I have tried to write a programme in the old style -- partly because I want to do that until I learn something else and partly because I want to run some code that i wrote years ago when that was the only way. When I try to run it I get a message box with the message "Line numbers are too close together. Start over and renumber your program with at least 9 spaces between line numbers." In fact, the line numbers are 10, 20 & 30 -- though if I were unwise enough to use 1, 2 & 3 ought not the code still to work? Can anyone advise?

This should not be happening. What version of TB and what version of Windows are you using?

I have never heard of such a problem in TB v.5 or any of the other earlier versions, of which I have all.

The only thing I can suggest is to open your code in an external text editor and examine it closely to make sure there is not some numbering anomaly which has somehow hidden itself in the code. I presume you used the TB editor to write the code. As you probably know, you can write TB programs in any ascii text editor and it should run.

I have no idea what things go on in the new editor which comes with TB v.6, nor what happens with Windows 10 or 11 or whatever besides Windows 7 and earlier.

Hopefully someone who knows about the latest TB v.6 version and its quirks, and/or Windows 10-11 and it's quirks, will happen along and shed some light on your problem.

Meanwhile, if you want to share the code, I will be glad to try to run it on my system and see if it will work.

Unfortunately, lately there seems to be "nobody home" on this forum and spammers have begun to infest the site. I don't know why Admin doesn't remove that stuff.

TB 6 editor adds some hidden lines of code at the beginning of every program I believe. This was in a thread on the older forum which has unfortunately been lost now. I do not use line numbers but everything works fine for me if I start at 100 and space the lines out by 10 in a small 3 line test program. Try just starting at a higher number.

A real pity about the previous forum, had a lot of useful information, and the original forum before that had even more.

TB 6 editor adds hidden lines...! are they visible when the code is opened in a text editor; and what do they say/do? And if one writes code in an external editor, without any such hidden lines, will TB v6 run it?
What on earth was the need for any such "added" lines of code in the first place, I wonder.
Old engineering proverb: "Very hard to make good design; very easy to screw good design up with changes".
Yes, it's a major pity about the forums.

Hi mcc,

Nothing shows up in a text editor. It was, if I remember correctly something to do with bugs or limitations with TB that required some additional lines. In the older forum John, Arsncott who wrote the editor explained that TB 6 adds lines at the beginning, I guess for the run/compile process. He never elaborated on what the lines actually did.

Possibly, and this is just a guess on my part, something to do with the limitations of the chain function required to pass the file to the TB interpreter. That is just a guess though. It is a real pity that John and some of the other experienced TB users have left the forum. They could offer a far better explanation than I could.

The "hidden lines" must have to do with something peculiar to the "New Editor" which TB 6 has. There have never been any bugs in TB that I am aware of. Also there have not been any changes in the core TB code.

So will a program whose code was composed in an external editor (without any "hidden lines") run on TB v.6? I think the hidden lines were there because of some requirement of the new editor, not because something is wrong in the core TB code because that has not been changed.

I have tried to raise BigJohn Arscott on his last known email, which bounced. Also his website is now a dead link. I'm afraid we've lost him.

Can anyone help with the line number problem aphBell asked about originally in his post? Can one write a line-numbered program in an external text editor and have it run in TB v6?

the tb 6 gold manual states that the additional lines are added to a temporary copy of the program. they include adding aliases and libraries plus the standard output window (which includes waiting for a key to be pressed when the program finishes).

you might add this as the first line to your program in order to change the line numbers:

100 !AUTOLINENUM

Thank you. The versions are Windows 11 Pro and TBbronze v. 6 (tb_bronze_6007_setup.msi). The code is very unexciting -- just something that I typed into the TB editor to try to make it run before I tried loading another programme. It was this:
10 print "Hello"
20 print 3 + 4
30 end
Since seeing your messages, all but the latest, I have tried changing the line numbers to 100, 200, 300, and the result was the same except that where the message previously had "9 spaces" it now had "2 spaces". I tried again with 1000, 1010, 1020, and the code worked! I will try what you suggest. I can prob. make things work by using line numbers

1000, though of course if anyone can tell me more about the underlying problem is then it would be good to know as it might help me to deal with future problems.

Anyway, thank you for your advice.

i suggest you should read the first chapter of the manual (it's similar in bronze and gold 6) which deals with the new editor, especially the section about the "run" menu and about line numbers.
